Here at Marsh Optical we pride ourselves on providing high quality eye exams. They are scheduled 30 minutes apart in order for us to spend quality time addressing your needs.
Optometrists are independent primary eye care providers. They are trained to examine, diagnose and treat disorders and diseases of the visual system, the eye and associated structures.
During an examination, doctors of optometry identify refractive problems such as myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness), and prescribe corrective glasses and/or contact lenses, but that is only a part of the examination. Optometrists also assess eye movements, the efficiency of eye teaming, and evaluate the accuracy and flexibility of the focusing system.
A detailed ocular health examination is also performed, including tests for any signs of disease such as glaucoma, cataract, and macular degeneration. Optometrists are often the first to diagnose such problems.
Checking the Optic Nerve Head is important.
Almost every type of health professional is taught to use the direct ophthalmoscope to visualize the optic nerve head which is one of the most significant indicators of health and wellness. It is the one place on the body where a clinician can directly visualize the moving blood stream, both the arterial side, the venious side, and where one of the cranial nerves can be seen.
Most clinicians never become comfortable in using the optic nerve as a diagnostic tool. The examination and evaluation is difficult to master and barriers (i.e. high refractive error and cataracts) can obstruct the view in certain people where there could potentially be a critical finding.
Optometrists and ophthalmologists, however, are the experts in the examination and evaluation of the optic nerve. Not only do they attend multiple lectures on the topic, they routinely examine this structure daily on every patient. They can look at it with multiple techniques and even have special tools to detail every aspect of the structure.
Marsh Optical accepts many health plans including Medicare, UFT Union and 1199 Union.
With the expanding scope of practice and their clinical training, doctors of optometry provide effective overall eye care.
They're not just glasses!
